Woman Punched During Robbery in CVS Parking Lot

A 46-year-old woman had her purse stolen by man who came up behind her.

A 46-year-old woman was punched in the face and robbed Monday evening, according to West Orange police.

The woman was walking in the parking lot of CVS Pharmacy at 217 Main St. when she was attacked. She said a man came up behind her at approximately 8:38 p.m.

The woman told police that the man repeatedly punched her in the face and chest in an attempt to take her purse. The man then stole her purse, containing cash, credit cards and other items, which she said were valued at about $200.

The man then jumped into a black-colored Saturn and sped away.

Police arrived to find the woman screaming in the parking lot, and the black Saturn driving away. Police pursued the car down Washington Street until it sped out of sight into Orange Township.

The Lt. Richard Levens said there are no further details about the robbery at this time.

The woman was not seriously injured, police said.

Can a Saturn really outrun our police cruisers?

Depends on a lot of factors, like the traffic at the time, and comes down to the safety of the pursuit, I would think.

Just steps away from the soon to be Edison Projects...what will the potential high end renters think of the rampant crime right outside the doors of their shiny new compound?

And just think, the high end renters can go 2 blocks north for a drink and a happy ending for $40... they just need to watch out they don't get shot in the parking lot.

These are the typical morally inferior losers with minimal intelligence. They will obviously get caught soon due to their stupidity. Hopefully after a car chase where they end up crippled and immobilised and looking forward to a short life span.

Does anyone know, or where I can find, the crime rate stats? This year v. last v. 2 years ago? The rate of robberies and murders certainly seem to have skyrocketed.

Kathryn:

The latest Uniform Crime Reports available are the preliminary reports for 2011 and can be accessed at this website:

While any and all crime disturbing (especially for the victim), I can assure you that crime in West Orange is not out of control nor has it risen precipitously.

What we have now is the immediacy of it been reported by on line media, which also has far broader distribution that The West Orange Chronicle ever did.

Accordingly, more people now know about what crime does happen faster than ever previously but, there's really not a great deal more of it.

The two murders in the last year (Chestnut Liquors and Misty's Bar) are unusual and the circumstances surrounding both suggest a rather depraved indfference to the value of a human life.

With a suspect identified in the Misty's homicide, let's hope for a quick arrest.

Did you hear about the two people who were mugged at gun point last night around 11:00pm? It happened on Watchung Ave near the gates to Rosedale Cemetery.
This part of Watchung has always been fairly safe, but it looks like that is changing. Time to rethink WO for our retirement plans next year.
