With 51 percent of the vote, the newly-opened Slate Restaurant and Bar scooped up the top spot in Patch's poll for the best sushi in West Orange.
Slate opened its doors earlier this month but seems to have won over the town in mere weeks.
The venue provides modern Japanese cuisine and includes international food and bar food such as burgers and french fries.
Slate was closely followed by Kim's Sushi, that was just a handful of votes shy from the top spot.
Congrats to Slate, the newest sushi provider of the community and thanks to the readers who voted!

Way to go Slate! It was pretty easy for me to vote you as the best. From the decor, to the amazing food and the ambiance at night, Slate definitely is the best new spot. Can't wait to see you guys again for my birthday mid April!

Their happy hour prices are unbelievably cheap. We had the Forbidden fruit martini for only 6 bucks each. I had their Chilean Seabass with this mint strawberry salsa and my husband had the filet mignon with this mixed mushroom cream sauce that we both died over...see you soon with my in-laws Slate =)

Interesting, isn't it, that none of these Slate fans have ever posted another comment here?

"Marvin" and "Joey S" love it, so it must be good! I'll stick with Yoshi Sono and Ariyoshi in South Orange, neither of which seems to need phantom Patchers to pump it.

I must agree that Slate is a welcome addition to the Lourdes area. A different approach to drinking and dining. We enjoyed the martinis and mojitos, also the excellent entrees. Can't say anything about the sushi nor sake offerings, may try them next visit.

Amazing food, great prices, and beautiful presentation! I have eaten the sakamoto every day for the past week! The atmosphere is very nice, lounge chairs are so comfortable! It is a great place to drink, eat or just hang out. I give it the highest recommendation!

My wife and I are so excited to try Slate. It is great to have another restaurant in our neighborhood. We eat at Due Amici, Gaffers and Egans all the time and love them! We will be at Slate this week, for sure.

Support my friends, yes. Create a bunch of new accounts and post "reviews," not so much.

Kim's Sushi is great. I haven't been to Slate yet, but want to check it out. There's no way a business that's been here only a few weeks should win for best sushi. Ah the power of the internet.

I thought this was a place to put genuine comments and feedback to help the restaurants improve and better serve our community. Instead, Ralph is insistent on bashing what is a wonderful addition to west orange dining and lounging. He must have a stake in another restaurant here in town that is gradually losing business to this brand new high end place-to-be, because I can see no other reason why he is so sour and negative. He certainly hasnt tried Slate's steak, or else he would have withdrawn all his harsh remarking after one bite of this moderately priced, delicious filet mignon I had on Saturday . Someone buy this man a drink so he can calm down, or tell his employers to stop working him so hard. He is miserable. Thanks Ralph, for hijacking this thread, maybe sit the rest of this inning out and go watch the yankees game on someone else's big screen projector.

MY wife and I ate at Slate this past Thursday night. the wait staff was courteous but a little inexperienced. They did give us plenty of attention, but need a little seasoning. The music was "loungy" but they kept it low so we were able to converse.
The sushi rolls we ordered were fresh and innovative. They were very reasonably priced at $10 each. Normally rolls in other sushi joints would be more. The owner greeted us and asked what we thought which was a nice touch. I plan on going back there to try the sashimi as he suggested. Forget the "guerilla" marketing here, this place most definitely deserves a try. They also have a cooked menu of entrees which we did not have, so it is not all sushi for the non sushi eater..

I'm turned off enough by the decor in the pic and the fake reviews from all these posters who've never posted another comment on Patch that I'm not ever planning on going, the positive comments from posters known to be real notwithstanding. I'll stick with the places I already know and trust, which, oddly enough, haven't needed to resort to fake reviews to get attention.

Ken, actually the decor is cool. Give it a try, the sushi was very good, much better than Yoshi Sono and Kim's.

Thanks for helping me celebrate my birthday this past weekend Slate! You guys were warm, welcoming and on top of it all, FUN!! It was the cherry on top to see someone proposed during my birthday at Slate. It was soo cute when the DJ lowered the music and directed our attention to the couple! Who says once we've posted we're not gonna follow up? =) Keep your "interesting" comments to your "interesting" psychic wannabe self. See you soon with my boyfriend and his family Slate.

It seems as if the management of slate are catering to young college age patrons(see Facebook page) by promoting extremely low priced alcohol. This scares me as the last thing west orange needs is young inexperienced drivers drinking and driving as the overwhelming majority of the patrons are not in walking distance of their homes.I hope the west orange police are diligent in keeping our streets safe.
