Police Arrest Four After Stolen Car Chase

Individuals were driving stolen car, one tried to flee on foot

Four men were arrested Sunday after leading police on a car chase across West Orange. The men were allegedly driving a stolen car from Newark, police said.

West Orange Police Capt. John Buoye said the chase began around 6:30 p.m. when police caught a black 2001 Audi A4 going through a red light on Main Street. He said the Audi sped off when police attempted to pull them over.

Police chased the car down Main Street, Columbia Street, Watchung Avenue, Park Avenue and Mt. Pleasant Avenue until reaching Route 280, Buoye said. The car only travelled a half mile across Route 280 eastbound before blowing out its front passenger tire, officials said.

After the car came to a stop, one of the men took off on foot trying to evade police, but was quickly apprehended. Three other men were arrested inside the car with no incident.

No one was injured in the incident and the car did not suffer any major damage, Buoye said.

Brandon Jacobs, 19, Walter Gaddy, 19 and Antwan Freeman, 25, all of East Orange were remanded to Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail. A 17-year-old was also taken by the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center and later released.

The men are charged with eluding police, receiving stolen property and possession of burglar tools after a screwdriver was found inside the car.

Buoye said it is not known whether the individuals are connected to other car thefts in the area.
