I have had this pizzeria on my list for a while now and had been curious to try it because of the name. I had to try a place that is called Pizza Center. I was envisioning a small place dedicated to really good pizza. It is on Main Street with metered parking.
I got lucky and found a space in front of the restaurant. There is a municipal lot next to this corner eatary.
The façade reminded me of a fast food restaurant — even more so as I walked in and noticed the bright orange tables attached to benches on either side of the space. The counter and kitchen were to the back of the space. I looked up to get completely overwhelmed by the variety of choices. I asked for a menu to make it easier but I was told there was none.
I quickly looked through and noticed hot and cold sandwiches, including chicken parmigiana, as well as dinners including pasta. Under the "grill" options, there were burgers and gyros. I was a bit surprised by the variety since I was expecting pizza and only pizza. They also had soup and Italian ice — literally a one-stop shop.
I focused on the pizza menu and decided on a few slices to go. I asked the friendly lady behind the counter if the mushrooms were fresh. She looked a bit confused for a second and then went to the back and asked. She informed me the mushroom were indeed fresh. I decided on a plain, mushroom and meatball slice ($1.85 to $2.35).
I sat down briefly to look around while waiting for my slices. I noticed it was a large and fairly clean space. There was a side entrance as well — my guess it led to the municipal lot.
The restaurant was not too busy, but I was there for a late lunch and may have missed the afternoon crowd.
Before I knew it, my slices were ready in a small box and I was headed to my car.
As I opened the box, I immediately noticed the pale mushrooms. I thought they are either raw or canned. After a taste, I realized they were canned.
After tasting the plain slice, it was apparent that the sauce was out of a can — it had a metal-like taste.
The crumbled meatballs actually tasted really good — almost like the gyro meat used in the hot sandwich. I found myself picking the meat off the pizza and eating it instead of the main attraction. The crust was fairly good — it was crunchy but not chewy enough. The cheese was a bit greasy.
