Neighbor's Tip Yields Two Burglary Arrests
Neighbor saw two men breaking into a car, called police
Police arrested two men after a neighbor saw them breaking into a parked car near her house on Susan Court in West Orange.
After hearing a nearby car alarm, the neighbor said she saw two men ransacking a Honda Civic. She immediately reported the incident to police who arrived on scene and spotted two black men dressed in dark clothing. Police said the men were "walking quickly" from the area towards Mississippi Avenue and "sweating profusely." When questioned by authorities, the individuals did not cite a similar reason as to what they were doing in the area.
According to the report, police found a 1999 black Honda Civic with the front passenger door open and the contents of the glove compartment scattered throughout the vehicle.
Dorel Stelien, 20, of West Orange and a 17-year-old teenager from Irvington were taken into custody where the neighbor confirmed she saw them searching the passenger side of the car.
A large magnet of the New York Giants football helmet was found lodged in the front of Stelien's pants, police said. According to the report, Stelien smiled and said, "That's all I took from the car."
When located, the owner of the Honda said other items were missing from his vehicle including $550 worth of computer software. He said he left his car locked.
Stelien was charged with burglary, conspiracy and theft, and was released pending his next court date. The Irvington teenager was also charged and released to his guardian pending his next court date.
The incident occurred Oct. 15 shortly before 9 p.m.
