West Orange Teacher Suspended After Sex Assault Charges
Interim Superintendent Jim O'Neill said a certified teacher will replace Christopher Yonitch, 36, of Livingston, for the remainder of the school year.
A West Orange fifth-grade teacher has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested last week on charges he sexually assaulted a student.
"Our highest priority is student safety," Interim Superintendent Jim O'Neill said in a statement. "We will closely monitor the case and the charges."
The Washington School teacher, Christopher Yonitch, 36, of Livingston, was arrested Feb. 7 on charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to officials at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
According to officials, the child is a 10-year-old student of Yonitch.
A certified teacher will take on Yonitch's class for the remainder of the school year, O'Neill said.
O’Neill issued the following statement from the district about the arrest on Thursday:
On February 6, 2013 the Washington School Principal and I were notified of allegations that one of our 5th grade elementary teachers was being investigated. During the day we cooperated with the police and facilitated opportunities for investigators to speak with the teacher and any students who might be able to shed light on the allegations. I was notified early this morning that the teacher had been arrested. I immediately notified the teacher via email and certified mail that he is suspended indefinitely effective immediately. This is now a police matter; we will secure the services of a certified teacher for that class for the remainder of the school year.
Our highest priority is student safety. We have responded to this disconcerting and disheartening development promptly and with the strongest action we are legally empowered to take. We will closely monitor the case and the charges. Most importantly any and all children who require or seek counseling will have open access to our district professionals for as long as necessary.

Oh, great! First Tony Cavanna's $228K/yr paid vacation (plus O'Neill's salary) and now this one @ %69.5K/yr. (plus the replacement teacher's salary).
A Pine Hill teacher has been suspended WITH PAY since May 2011 (1 year and 9 months paid vacation so far @ $60K/year).
He's just been indicted on 92 counts and who knows how long it will be until he takes a plea deal or goes to trial. According the NJEA contract, the Gloucester Twp taxpayers have been paying this teacher for nearly two years and will continue to do so for as long as he can drag out the trial.
Nice for him, not so nice for the taxpayers and students who could use that money to support the school system. Ka-CHING!!

I just want to know what actions are goin to take the school? My daughter was told that she needs to go to the batroom with another friends like two or three this is ridiculous the school should call for a meeting to give us an explanation and let us know about the security system that they have now in order to prevent that this is not gonna happen again with another child, I feel sorry for this child an I can't think that this can happen with any kid at the school.... Parents we have to speak in orde to save our kids..!

This is the second time in less than a year something like this occurred. While it is true that the suspension without is the strongest response the board of education legal has my thinking is that the school district is not doing what it has to do to prevent things like this from occurring in the first place. The supervision of the school staff for which the taxpayers pay a small fortune in administrative cost need a lot of improvement in this regard. The school administration has to account for this.

You are seriously so dense Mr. Kraemer. The BOE doesn't have a crystal ball to see these types of things happening. If you do, then by all means please share it with the wonderful people of WO. The School administration is NOT accountable for this action, the teacher should be. If one of my employees is arrested for drug posession on the weekend, but when I hired them they had no criminal record, is that my fault? Absolutely not.
You too often take an issue and twist so much that it makes sense in only your head. Thank Goodness the people of WO did not vote you in as you seem to not have a grasp on ANY issue in relation to the town.

I would think that because in this country you are innocent until proven guilty, the WOBOE probably has to continue to pay his salary. Now, what I believe should happen is, if convicted, he should have to pay back the salary back to the day he was arrested!
They did the right thing by suspending him and following the case. As for the inconvenience of children having to go to the bathroom in pairs, quit complaining! It's for the safety of the kids. The school system is NOT God and doesn't know every single person who might be capable of sexually abusing our kids! They can only go by checking on the backgrounds. Unfortunately, there are many men and women in many employment positions who are capable of doing such things or continuing to do such things without ANYONE ever speaking up! This is where we MUST educate our children to not be afraid to speak up. Things like this don't get reported because of what the abuser usually says to the abusee.... "This is our little secret" " if you tell anyone you'll never...." "People will think....about you" etc, etc. they trap them emotionally anyway they can because of their own sickness. So instead of getting mad at society or systems let's educate our children and build up our children's confidence and self esteem.
If this guy is found guilty and convicted, may he get the toughest sentence possible! I despise people who take advantage of others, but ESPECIALLY our precious children.

They are lying on this man! This little girl is known to lie. This is such a small world. When parents teach their children to lie, they will grow up to be criminals. I hope that this parent will encourage her to speak the truth. I do not know the teacher personally, but he has a great reputation according to my children.

I find it hard to believe that the police would arrest someone based solely on the words of a ten year old. There must be other evidence. Otherwise, we are no longer living in America. This could lead to parents making their children lie for blackmail purposes. This could lead to all kinds of chaos.

James Would you agree that it's at least possible that in this particular instance this child is telling the truth? Also, regarding this person that you do not know personally, what does having a great reputation have to do with what he's charged with? Would you agree that the answer to this question is " Nothing" ?

James I agree with you 100%. I have heard all they same things you are talking about, and I do know the teacher. @Franklin Street the 10 year old is the accuser what else do they need, if your child said a teacher (god forbid) did something to to him/or her you would want the teacher removed right?
Blackmail is exactly what is happening in this situation which is already leading to all kinds of chaos in our town, our schools, for our teachers, and anyone else who wants to help a neglected troubled child.I guarantee a lot of children that actually need help will not get it now because people are afraid of the retaliation from the parents.

I heard that her parents are retaliating because Mr. Yonitch called DYFS on them. Well I believe the teacher in this situation because I know him, I know tons of kids that were in his class and I think this childs parents should be ashamed of themselves for letting their child continue with the lies. They are mad at the teacher for caring for their child when they did not. Obviously this is all about revenge . . .

James Is it possible her family members are lying about the little girl's lying? You wrote parents teach their children to lie. Lori W. wrote the same thing. It stands to reason that the parents are liars. So why should we believe what family members say about her? But you said it best ; Reserve your judgement.

@John Anthony Prignano Let me clarify: I stated that there are parents who do teach their children to lie (to say the least). I did NOT say that these parents teach their children to lie. I don't know any of these people.
I also know that 'good' people can actually do bad things just like people who are creepy to us can actually be some of the most honest people. I'm guessing you read my comment quickly and took it the wrong way or just assumed I was not talking about this child's parents.

@James this is exactly why WOBOE did the right thing. If it comes out that this man is innocent, I'm sure the results could end up being much more expensive on the district. This is another fact, people do lie and people do teach their children to lie. May the real truth be COMPLETELY exposed!

I stand by remarks. The BOE has to accountable for the actions of the people they hire. A captian is respnonsible for the ship and the sailors they comand. A business is responsbile for the actions of those they employ. Managers are responsible for the people they manage. Also this is the second occurance of this nature in less than a year. Thus the BOE has look internally so we don't have a thrid occurance. Protection of children is the responsibility of the leaders of our schools. Ultimately the BOE is responsible and the citizen have to hold them to account.

And I stand by statement that you are incredibly dense. And you have a severe lack of proper spelling, to the point where any point you were trying to make is null in void. Again, you cannot blame an employer for someone's alleged conduct, when they had zero prior offenses.
And I also stand by the fact that you have yet to be elected to ANY political office, because of the above statements.

Everyone needs to realize that a child was involved in this regardless to how anyone feels about the teacher and "he said, she said and I heard"..think about what this child just went through..after investigations he was arrested for a reason, not on any lies that people on here are saying she said or her parents told her to say, if anyone knows the truth its the child and the teacher, not any of us, unless you were there on these several days that this little girl had to suffer at the hands of someone she trusted. To all the parents, what if it was your child, your family, your friends' child, what would you say? Would that child be lying then? Would he be such a great teacher when he gets convicted? How can you console this child or any other child he may have done this to, and they are to scared to speak up. Some of these negative comments are ridiculous, we are adults here talking about a child, who can't defend herself..KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU SPEAK..THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR CHILD OT FAMILY

If it was my child, he/she would not have lied on the teacher. The uncle live next door, and he is a chronic liar. I dont condone these things, but this family, they are source to be reckoned with. I am sorry that this has happened, but I pray that the truth will come out.

@Baya you just said "if anyone knows the truth its the child and the teacher, not any of us" and then you talk about how the little girl had to "suffer at the hands of someone she trusted". How do you know she had to suffer? Then you say very clearly "KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU SPEAK..THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR CHILD OT FAMILY" You are contradicting yourself in the same sentence. This whole story is bull, and I know some facts, I know this teacher, and he knows my children. The family of this child should be ashamed of themselves, they are not the victim in this case, Mr. Yonitch is and when the truth comes out who is going to have lost, not the family who is behind all of the lies, but the child and the teacher.
john anthony prignano
12:53 pm on Friday, February 15, 2013
Heather You're right, Baya absolutely contradicted herself. But since you ABSOLUTELY know some facts, why don't you present these facts to the authorities ? Do you think stating " I know this teacher, and he knows my children " has any relevancy at all regarding Mr. Yonitch's guilt or innocence? Starting with "This whole story is bull " your comments are as bad as Baya's comments. Mr. Yonitch is innocent until proven guilty. I don't support him, and I don't support his accuser. I support the truth, which has yet to be determined by the court.

@John, I am available should anyone wish to speak with me in regards to Mr. Yonitch, and you are correct my statement does not have relevancy to his guilt or innocence however I will defend what I feel is correct and what I feel is the truth. That being said I will continue to fight for Mr. Yonitch who has been wrongly accused, and again the truth will come out.

Heather You can call me at 973 325 3338 or visit at 8 Westwood Drive South But Heather, if I may, you wrote "This whole story is bull, and I KNOW SOME FACTS". But in the above letter, you write "I will defend what I FEEL is correct, and what I FEEL is the truth". Why didn't you write; "What I KNOW is correct, and what I KNOW is the truth?".Mr. Yonitch is innocent until proven guilty. As I said, if he's found innocent of the charges on a Friday then as far as I'm concerned , his career and reputation are intact, and he should be standing in front of his class on Monday. I want the truth, whatever it may be, to come out.

So John Anthony Prignano, if a good friend of yours was accused of a crime that they say they didn't committ, you wouldn't support your friend? You wouldn't stand by them? You would wait for the truth as determined by the court? Heather has every right to stand up and support a person she feels is innocent. She doesn't have to share infomation with you. How do you know what is relevant and what is not? Bays statement was completely contadictory. She has already chosen to be judge and jury and found the teacher guilty while saying no one yet knows the truth. And, if you really believe that someone can be accused of something like this, found innocent, and his life and career continue on as if nothing occurred, you are living in a fantasy world.
john anthony prignano
4:39 am on Saturday, February 16, 2013
woresident Respectfully, I said, as far as I AM concerned, their reputation is intact. How would YOU regard someone who was proven to be falsely accused? Presumed innocent, found innocent, AND THEN....? Where do I say Heather doesn't have a right to free speech? Where? If I knew potentially exculpatory FACTS about an accused friend, or anyone for that matter, I would run to tell the authorities. Wouldn't you do the same? I am certain that I know what my OPINION is of what is relevant and what isn't. And I am certain that Heather's OPINION agrees with my opinion in this particular instance. Would I abandon a friend who says he's innocent? No. CLEARLY, woresident, I believe everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Have you ever known someone close to you who said they didn't engage in bad or illegal behavior, but they did? Has someone close to you ever disappointed you? Have you ever said you didn't engage in bad behavior, but you did? woresident, you said you were going to ignore me, but you can't, because you lack self - discipline, and because much of what I write are FACTS which not only upset you, but upset many of the other residents of the fantasy world you all choose to live in.

woresident, While I have your attention - do you know if there is more instructional time included in the latest West Orange teacher's contract? Dr. O'Neil comes from Chatham. Chatham High provides the hourly equivalent of 30 days more instructional time than West Orange High . Chatham spends a little over $15,000 per pupil, while West Orange spends over $21,000. Chatham's median family income is about $180,000. West Orange's median family income is about $100,000. Chatham spends the equivalent of about 8.3% of median family income on each pupil, while West Orange spends about 21%. AND Chatham has an all - volunteer fire department. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?

I just found out about this...it is just a sad sad story....you can never foresee what goes on in the mind of a person...no one can predict the actions of anyone..but I hope this is not something he would have done in the midst of his mind being clouded with bad judgement......one mistake can be life changing,,,,as teachers we must be careful of caring,,,never be alone with a student always be on guard and aware of the potential outcomes, leave doors open, others are present, involve others like the school social worker, principal, VP, family, community, use the whole village to protect ourselves and our children so that we avoid circumstances like this.
