Interactive Burglary Map: Maplewood, Millburn, South Orange, West Orange
Police investigate string of attempted, successful burglaries that could be related
The following is an interactive map of recent burglaries in Maplewood, Millburn, South Orange and West Orange during the past month (as of Oct. 29). All four areas have seen numerous attempted burglaries and a number of successful ones that appear to be related. Police currently are investigating. The thief — or thieves — seem to be targeting electronics. Many of the taken items include iPods, iPads and televisions. In some of the burglaries, though, the thieves did take cash and other personal valuables.
In e-mail exchanges obtained by Patch between alleged victims and witnesses in West Orange, they have said they've seen police scour their neighborhood along Ridgeview Avenue and Silver Spring Road in the early mornings Monday and Tuesday. Their names are withheld due to the nature of the crime.
In an e-mail dated Oct. 28, one witness writes, "My neighbor behind me on Silver Spring (I'm on Ridgeview) told me about it. She got up and the police told her they were looking for someone. She was a little shaken and couldn't get back to sleep. She kept looking out the window and at 4:30 am (sic) she saw the criminal come out of his hiding place behind our garage, climb the fence and run through her yard towards Silver Spring. By the time the police arrived he was gone."
The locations of the points on the map are not exact, but are within range of the targeted areas. No exact addresses are given. The routes shown are not routes taken by the alleged thieves, but are used as distance markers.
Maplewood burglaries are listed in red. Millburn in purple. South Orange in blue and West Orange in yellow.
