West Orange Curfew Lifted, Shelter Closed
Latest update from Mayor Robert Parisi says the jitney will resume Friday with an revised schedule.
West Orange's 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew that has been in effect since Oct. 31 has been lifted, the township announced a short while ago via a Reverse 9-1-1 call from Mayor Robert Parisi.
Despite the curfew being lifted, gas stations in town will continue to close at 6 p.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m. until further notice.
Parisi also announced:
- The emergency shelter at West Orange High School is now closed.
- After school activities will resume with a normal schedule.
- West Orange jitney service will resume with a revised schedule starting Friday. Until train service is restored on the Morris & Essex line of NJ Transit, the jitney will run all four of its routes that service the Valley, Gregory St. Cloud and Mt. Pleasant/Prospect neighborhoods to and from the Erie Loop bus stop. This stop is located on Main St. at the West Orange/Orange line.
Also, pickup and dropoff destinations will be diverted to alternative areas. For more information on the new area locations and schedules, go to westorange.org.
From the Erie Loop, NJ Transit bus service is available to Penn Station Newark, where passengers may board either NJ Transit buses or NJ Transit trains to New York City.
Three NJ Transit bus lines run between the Erie Loop and Penn Station Newark: Bus Routes 21, 71 and 73. Frequent service is provided during the morning and evening peak periods.
NJ Transit Bus 108 travels between Penn Station Newark and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. Their frequency during the morning and evening peak periods is "load and go."
Morning service on the West Orange Jitney will remain unchanged from the existing schedule. All buses in all routes will follow the existing schedule. After the last stop, each bus will proceed to the Erie Loop Bus Stop on Main Street. It will take approximately five minutes from the last jitney stop to reach the Erie Loop Bus stop.
During the evening service, buses will depart approximately every 20 minutes, starting at 5:10 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m., from the parking lot adjacent to Karl's Appliances opposite the loop. Between 5:50 p.m. and 7:10 p.m., a separate bus will be provided for Routes 1 and 2.
Before and after those times, Routes 1 and 2 will be combined on one bus similar to the current services. Routes 3 and 4 will have their own bus for the entire evening travel period.
- Residents may begin putting storm-related brush out to the curb for pickup, Parisi said. Residents are being advised to separate all brush from leaves. The township will not pick up stumps, trunks or whole trees.
