Beyond Books: Learning and Literacy at the Library

Summer's around the corner, what's your reading plan?

Summer is quickly approaching (hooray!) As exciting as that is for the kids, parents and caregivers may be stressing over how to provide their children with memorable experiences over the next few months.

You can turn to the West Orange Public Library for help. The Library's summer reading program is a great way to encourage reading and learning in a fun, relaxed atmosphere that your child will enjoy.

Make summertime a meaningful time. Studies have shown that children who read over the summerperform better in school in the fall. Children who don’t read over the summer tend to lose some of their literacy skills. In his book "The Power of Reading," Stephen Krashen says, "More than any other public institution, including the schools, the public library contributes to the intellectual growth of children during the summer." Wouldn't you like to provide your children with the opportunity to maintain their literacy skills and develop their joy of learning? I'm pretty sure the answer to that question is a resounding "yes!"

Here’s how you can do just that. Children can have fun while keeping up their reading skills this summer by joining the Library's summer reading program, "One World, Many Stories."

Kids can keep track of the books they read all summer with their own online reading log. Children who stop by the Library weekly after they’ve read at least five books during that week will receive a small prize. Kids who read at least five books every week between June 27 and August 19 will be invited to a grand finale party at the Library in August.

In addition to signing up for the reading program, children can participate in exciting events throughout the summer. These activities are designed to foster a love of language and reading, encourage creativity and build a sense of community. This summer’s activities include a concert by Nina's Music, a performance by Act!vated Story Theatre, a visit from Choo Choo Charlie, an interactive performance of "Around the World in 80 Days," and a worry doll craft workshop.

Reading expert, Krashen also says that children read more when they listen to and discuss stories. So, in addition to the special summer events, the Library will offer story times and book discussion groups for all ages again this summer. These sessions provide the perfect, supportive environment for helping your children strengthen their reading and listening skills.

And while you're at it, why not make sure you influence your child's reading habits with your own example. As role models for children, parents and older siblings can influence a child's reading development. Make sure your children see you reading this summer and they'll want to read, too.

In fact, the whole family can sign up for the Library's summer reading program! Summer events are planned for teens and 'tweens and even adults.

The Library provides a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the family to learn, grow and have fun together, while being easy on the family budget — everything is free! Give your children the gift of reading this summer. Make sure everyone in your family has a free library card in their wallet. A library card is your passport to a whole world of stories, information and fun!
