Poll: Would You Miss Your Local Kmart/Sears Store

Struggling Retailer Announces Plans to Close At Least 100 Stores; No Word on Whether This Effects Essex County.

Earlier today, long-struggling retailer Sears Holding Corp. announced it will close between 100-120 stores nationwide in its latest attempt to make itself profitable, according to The Huffington Post.

There is no word whether any local stores will close, although the retailer said a final list will be posted upon completion at searsmedia.com.

This news could impact several Sears Holding Corp. stores in Essex County, including Kmart stores in Belleville and West Orange, Sears stores at the Livingston Mall and in West Caldwell, and the Sears Essentials in West Orange.

However, with the growth of Target and Walmart in recent years, would you miss your local Kmart and/or Sears stores if they closed?

Take our poll below. And, as always, weigh in with your comments below.

I'll miss Sears because of the appliance deals and the car care, but the Kmart near me has been filthy for years. It's always a nightmare to get anything in there.

Back when Sears had a catalog desk, I came to the assistance of a worker who had suffered an epileptic seizure. For this, I was excoriated by management for entering an area that was for employees only. About a month later, I stopped by the desk to ask how the young man was doing, and was told that he had been fired. I therefore came to the inescapable conclusion that Sears was evil, and never shopped there again. So ask me if I'll miss it.

I wouldn't miss any of them, I don't shop in those stores. I shop at the Short Hills Mall. Sometimes Lord & Taylor.

Wouldn't miss either one, especially the Kmart in W. Orange? Bulldoze it. Now. What a dirty store with nasty personnel! When are these places going to learn that customer service really means something?

I hope they close the KMart in West Orange and replace it with Target. If they close it and leave the store vacant we'll be stuck driving out to Route 10 or Route 3 to get to a department store.

I definitely will miss K-Mart. It was one of the few places where one could get cheap clothing and electronics for common people like myself. I hope they get replaced by a walmart since the closest one you can go to is in Kearny

I'd love to see this K-Mart close. A Target would be a much better fit next to a Whole Foods, too.

Neither Target nor Walmart would be a candidate for that property as they both have specific formulas for their real estate and the current footprint would not accomodate them.

@wohopeful - would you care to share with us what Target's "specific formula" is and why the current footprint would not accommodate them?

Mac, please visit more than one Target store and you will quickly see that everyone is built to almost the same specifications with at least two main entrances and exist, single floor with a main racetrack center aisle. The current property on Prospect could hardly accomodate two main entrances, a single level, let alone a main racetrack aisle in the center as the property is divided with an escalator in the center of the rertail space.

In addition the exterior aesthetics have a formula as well and the current strip mall would hardly accomodate the requirements of the Target Corporation.

I understand you would like to have a Target store in the space but it just isn't going to happen. Besides the demographics of the current clientele call more for a dollar store than a major department store retailer.

@wohopeful - it sounds like you have not been to very many Target stores yourself. Not all Target stores are on a single level. In fact, the one in Gaithersburg, MD is on 2 levels with 2 escalators and 2 large elevators. I used to shop there all the time when I worked in that area a few years ago. Have you ever been to Target in East Hanover (route 10)? There is only 1 entrance/exit, not 2. I have no idea where you are getting your information from, but it is clearly not correct, as the stores do not conform to the specifications you state.

Mac, it is a moot point at this time as the store in question is not on the first list of stores to be closed.
