Armed Robbery Foiled by 63-Year-Old Man

A man with a handgun attempted to rob the attendant at the Delta gas station on Central Avenue on Thursday.

A 63-year-old gas station attendant fought back against a man trying to rob him at gunpoint this week.

At about 9 p.m. on Thursday, a man with a handgun and blue mask covering his face attempted to rob the attendant at the Delta gas station, at 3 Central Ave. Instead of handing over the cash, the attendant refused and put up a fight, according to police.

The 63-year-old man was punched in the face, and then the man with the handgun fled without taking any money, according to police.

The attendant received minor bruising to his face and cheek. He refused medical attention, according to police.

The man who attempted to rob the attendant was described as an African American, between the age of 23 and 26, with a thin build and short black hair, said police.

The Essex County K-9 Unit was called to investigate the scene, but turned up no leads, according to police.

What is happening in West Orange to fuel the rising crime rate and putting our community at risk? The crime is spiraling out of control, property taxes are skyrocketing beyond the imaginable and home values have decreased to insultingly new lows, and yet nothing is being done to abate it.

According to this article the crime rate is down this year compared to last year: http://westorange.patch.com/articles/crime-rates-drop-17-during-first-half-of-2012

According to this data (scroll down to 'Crimes in West Orange by Year', the crime rate has pretty consistently gone down each year since 1999!! http://www.city-data.com/city/West-Orange-New-Jersey.html

As mentioned in several other comments on the west orange patch, due to the internet and social media popularity, people are just hearing about more crime than previous years availability of such information.

Your opinion is quite inaccurate and only causes those who don't 'investigate the facts' to get freaked out and not feel safe. I'm just saying.....negativity isn't very productive.

Lori
I don't care about your statistics.
When will there be appropriate outrage.
Maybe when a loved one is killed? A son? A daughter? A mother? A father?...
These are LIFE Threatening crimes that must be reported.
As a parent I rely on information how I make decisions for my families safety.

@Tom They aren't 'my statistics'. No one said anything about not reporting any crimes. All crimes should be reported...in fact it should be a crime to not report a crime!! I have loved ones too and I take safety precautions, but I don't rely on over-reactions. It's fine for people to be upset and vocal...but completely not necessary to blow it WAY out of proportion.

Huh, that's weird, wohopeful; my taxes have been pretty much unchanged for going on 3 years now and my home's value has definitely increased during the same time frame. Probably a conspiracy against you; time to move!

@Ken - your home value increased? That is not the norm in this town. According to Zillow and Trulia estimates, mine is down almost 100k in value in just 2.5 years.

Does anyone know the any of the victims of the recent armed robberies in West Orange?
How are they doing?
I think we could benefit from their stories if they are willing to share.
Thanks
